How many local businesses come back for their own town?

Between 16 and 59 percent do not, depending on the line of work and the county. We searched Google's Places data for the best business of each kind in each town, sixty results deep, and checked whether each business we had measured came back in that list. The lowest reading is Nassau med spas and the highest is Brooklyn auto repair. Every cell below was read with the same instrument at the same depth in September 2026, which is the part that makes them comparable to each other.

Not in the first sixty for their own town, by line of work and county

Each cell is how many of the businesses we measured in that county and line of work did not appear when we searched for the best of their kind in the town their own listing gives, out of how many we measured there. The share is the two numbers divided, and the two numbers are the reading.

4450 businesses across 36 readings. Every cell read sixty results deep with a location bias on the town center, September 2026.

The same reading by town

Every town in the four sweeps that holds at least forty measured businesses, summed across the nine trades. Seven towns are left out because their cell is smaller than that, and a share of a dozen businesses is an anecdote with a percent sign on it.

What the grid says

The line of work moves the answer far more than the county does

Inside any one county the nine trades spread about thirty seven points, from 16 percent for Nassau med spas to 55 for Nassau plumbing. The same trade read across all four counties moves about thirteen. Plumbing is the steadiest of the nine, within three points everywhere, and auto repair the least, spanning 38 to 59. So a figure quoted without its line of work says very little, and one quoted without its county says rather more than people assume.

It is almost never the rating

Most of the businesses missing from these lists are rated 4.5 or better. The median rating across the 36 readings runs from 3.8 to 5.0, so being good is not what separates the ones that come back.

Nobody is over the shelf any more

Google returns twenty results a page and we read three, so sixty. At that depth no town in any of the four counties holds more businesses of one kind than the list had room for, so none of these shares is a town running out of room.

The worst reading is a trade with plenty of reviews

Brooklyn auto repair is the highest cell here at 59 percent, and the median Brooklyn repair shop carries 151 reviews. Reviews are not what is missing.

How this was measured, and what it does not say

Every business Google's Places data returns for the line of work across the towns in each county sweep was read once, keeping the listing's own category, rating, review count, photo count, hours and website link. Then one search per town, for the best business of that kind in that town, with a location bias on the town center, read three pages deep. A business counts as absent when it does not appear in those sixty.

This is the Places feed, which is what apps and assistants read. It is close to but not identical to the Maps app on a phone: asked for the best plumber in Hicksville on 2026-09-20 the two agreed on the first name and had swapped two of the next three by the fourth. Treat a position as close rather than exact.

It is one reading, on one day, from one point in each town, and it is a sweep of the listings Google returns rather than a census of the businesses that exist. A business Google does not show us is a business we did not measure. Nothing here is a national rate and none of it should be quoted as one.

Common questions

What does not in the first sixty actually mean?
That we searched Google's Places data for the best business of that kind in the town the listing itself gives, read sixty results, and the business was not among them. It is not a claim that a customer can never find them. Somebody searching their name finds them, and somebody standing in a different part of town gets a differently ordered list.
Why sixty results and not the usual ten or twenty?
Because twenty is a shelf, not a finding. Google returns twenty a page, so a town holding thirty businesses of one kind forces ten of them out whatever they do. We read this at twenty until September 2026 and the shares came out roughly twice as high; at sixty no town in any of the four counties is over the shelf, so the number is about the businesses and not about the page size.
Can I quote these figures?
Yes, with the county and the line of work named, because the spread between cells is wider than any single figure. The page is published under CC BY and the method is above. If you want the underlying per-business rows for a story, ask.
How often is this re-measured?
Each figure carries an expiry date in the ledger it is rendered from. When a sweep passes it the number stops rendering and the build fails, rather than the page quietly showing last season's reading.
