How many Google reviews do I actually need?
Ten. In our own experience with a handful of profiles, nine reviews to ten was where a ranking first moved and ten to eleven did nothing further, so ten is the first threshold worth aiming at. That is experience, not a stored run, and the source note below says so. After that the number that matters is not a universal target but the middle of your own category, because a customer is comparing you to the business beside you and nobody else. That middle ranges from 8 reviews for Nassau electricians to 465 for restaurants, so the same review count can read as established in one trade and brand new in another. And the middle moves with geography as much as with trade, in both directions. We measured plumbing, heating, electrical, roofing and auto repair across four counties in September 2026. The median electrician carries 8 reviews in Nassau and 1 in Queens, while the median repair shop carries 107 in Nassau and 153 in Queens. The same geography runs opposite ways for electrical and for auto repair, so a target quoted without its county and its trade is not a measurement.

How thin the review counts actually are
Nine trades, one sweep each across eight Nassau towns, September 2026. Every count below is businesses sitting under the line, not an average.
contractors show a flawless five on fewer than ten reviews. A perfect score on six reviews is not evidence and a homeowner reads it as untested.
HVAC companies have fewer than fifty reviews, in a trade where the median is 20 and one bad winter fills a competitor's page.
med spas have under fifty, against a category middle of 60. Here the gap between you and next door is visible on one screen.
salons sit under twenty five while the middle of their category is 70, the widest distance between the thin end and the middle we measured.
plumbers have under fifty reviews. The median is 31, so half the trade is closer to starting than to established.
repair shops are under twenty five against a median of 107, a long way below their own trade's middle.
Source: the September 2026 sweeps across Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn, twenty sweeps in all, 5387 businesses measured in total. The ten-review threshold comes from our own experience on a small number of profiles; it is not a stored run and not a controlled study, so treat it as the point worth aiming at first rather than as a law.
Why the number is not the whole story
A perfect score can be worse than a good one
5.0 across six reviews and 4.7 across ninety are not the same claim. The second is evidence. The first is a business nobody has stress tested, and buyers read it that way without being able to say why.
Recency counts more than total
Forty reviews with the newest one eighteen months old reads as a business that used to be busy. A steady trickle beats a burst followed by silence.
Reviews decide the pick, not the appearance
Reviews tell Google you are worth recommending once it has decided to show you. Whether you appear at all leans on categories, hours, photographs and whether your website link loads.
Never buy them
Google removes purchased reviews and can suspend the profile. There is no version of this that is worth the risk, and the businesses that do it are visible in the data by the shape of their review dates.
Ask at the moment of relief
When the heat comes back on, when the keys go back, at the walkthrough. Asked then it works. Asked by email a week later it mostly does not.
Answer the unhappy ones plainly
A reply that argues does more damage than the review did. Future customers are reading the reply, not settling the dispute.
Check yours in about thirty seconds
Search your own category and town on a phone, then count reviews on the three businesses above you.
If your newest review is older than three months, that is the problem before the total is.
If you are on a perfect five with under ten reviews, your next ten matter more than your rating does.

What the review picture looks like trade by trade
Plumbers
13 publish no hours at all, in a trade people search at midnight.
HVAC
6 send callers to a website link that will not load.
Electricians
8 reviews is the middle of this trade, and 20 have none of their hours on Google.
Roofers
Every one of them publishes its hours. 64 have under twenty five reviews.
Auto repair
A median of 107 reviews, the most of nine trades, and 47 percent still missing from their own town's list.
Landscapers
37 of 81 never appear in the first sixty for their own town.
Contractors
56 hold a perfect five on fewer than ten reviews, which reads as no evidence.
Salons
265 salons across eight towns, and 98 are under fifty reviews.
Med spas
On a listing customers choose by looking, 45 carry fewer than ten photos.
Restaurants
465 reviews is the middle of this category and the median rating is 4.4, the lowest of any Nassau line of work measured.
Dentists
116 of 326 sit on a flat five, and 177 show fewer than ten photos.
Four counties, one instrument
Plumbing, heating, electrical, roofing and auto repair, read the same way across Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn in September 2026. Counts are of listings carrying a website and showing a gap on their Google profile, so the readings are comparable. All four were read on 20 September. The useful part is that the direction reverses depending on the trade.
Electrical: the island runs far ahead of the boroughs
Nassau 8, Suffolk 30, Queens 1, Brooklyn 2. A Queens electrician with twenty honest reviews would sit clear of most of the borough.
Auto repair: the boroughs run ahead of the island
Nassau 107, Suffolk 81, Queens 153, Brooklyn 151. It carries the highest median of the five in all four counties.
Plumbing and heating: Suffolk sets the bar
Plumbing runs 31 in Nassau and 76 in Suffolk, heating 20 against 41. Both boroughs sit closer to Nassau than to Suffolk.
Roofing: Brooklyn sets it
Nassau 17, Suffolk 27, Queens 17, Brooklyn 31. A different county leads in each trade, which is the whole reason a single number fails.
What this means for the number you are chasing
There is no borough penalty and no island advantage. There is a bar for your line of work in your county and it is the only one that decides whether a customer comparing two listings picks yours. Ten first, then your own middle.
How many five-star reviews move your number
Two numbers off your own listing, and this works out what it takes to shift the average Google prints beside your name. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Five-star reviews needed to push the displayed average up by one decimal place.
The same arithmetic to the next half step, which is the move a customer actually notices.
Nothing is worked out until both boxes have a number in them. This is arithmetic on an average, not a measurement of ours and not a promise about what Google will display.
Common questions
- Is there a magic number of reviews for ranking?
- No, and anyone quoting one precisely is guessing. Ten is the first threshold we have seen move anything, and after that the useful target is the middle of your own category, because that is who you are being compared against on the screen.
- Does the number change depending on where I am?
- More than it changes by trade. The median electrician carries 8 reviews in Nassau and 1 in Queens, measured the same way in the same month. A business clearing the Nassau middle would be ahead of most electricians we measured in Queens, and one clearing the Queens middle would be far behind in Suffolk. That is why we publish the county beside every figure.
- Do replies to reviews matter?
- They matter to the person reading, which is the point. There is no reliable public evidence that replying changes ranking, so we do not claim it does. We say it changes whether somebody calls you after reading a one-star.
- What about reviews on Yelp and Facebook?
- They matter for the customer who lands there, and much less for Google. If you have limited effort, Google first, then whichever second site actually sends you people, which is usually not the one you would guess.
- Can I ask only the happy customers?
- No. Google's terms call that review gating and it puts the profile at risk. Ask everybody, and fix the thing that produces unhappy ones.
- How fast can ten reviews happen?
- For a trade seeing customers weekly, a few weeks once the asking is built into the job. For a contractor finishing one job a month, longer, which is exactly why it is the first thing we set up rather than the last.
What to do about it
How to get more Google reviews
The asking method, and the number you are actually aiming at.
Reviews that win the pick
The asking system that gets you there, and why we will not write a review for you or buy one.
What is a good Google rating
Above the middle of your own line of work in your own county. The median runs from 3.8 for Queens electricians to 5.0 for roofers everywhere we read.
Local SEO in Suffolk County, measured
Where the median plumber carries 76 reviews against Nassau's 31, which is why a single national number is useless.
Local SEO in Queens, measured
Where the median electrician carries 1 review, which is the clearest case there is for why the number you need depends on where you are.
